Day 2 of our 9 day trip to Munich in the fall
We landed in Munich at around 10:10 in the morning. I watched only one movie the entire flight (Amazing Spider-Man) but after that it was a whole lot of adjusting, turning and readjusting together to find a good position to sleep. So I had my eyes closed for a good 5 hours maybe but real sleep wise it was barely anything it felt like. Looking outside however it was extremely cloudy and gloomy. Uh oh would there be rain? Wunderground didn’t say anything about rain!
The airport was extremely clean and tidy but surprisingly also really quiet. We were like the only airport that had landed during that time. Once outside the airport we crossed this large covered plaza which had this balling Bentley display. They also had some high tech rotating advertising displays. German engineering at work.
From there we took the 41 minute subway ride all the way to the main train station of Hauptbahnof. While trying to buy tickets at the airport a lady came over to us and gave us their “Partner” ticket good for 5 people. So all we needed to do was but another instead of 2. Sweet!
When we got out of the platform we must’ve looked totally lost trying to figure out which was the best exit closest to us. An old man spotted us and kept saying S Bahn and pointing down. At first I kid of ignored him because I knew we didn’t need to go back down for the subway. We then asked him how to get to the street where our hotel was. He picked up what we were trying to say as he didn’t speak any English of course and started leading our whole pack towards where we needed to go. We were only hours into our trip and already a good Samaritan comes to our rescue. We thank him and find the hotel really quickly.
The hotel we’re staying at for 4 nights is the Maratim Munich Hotel. I picked this one up on Priceline for 75 a night. It took me so long with the bids to get this one but i finally did. I was originally hoping for 65 based on some old winnings but I was still happy with this. Lucky for us we were able to check in to settle in and freshen up. We agreed to meet back at the lobby at 12:30PM.
For the afternoon we basically walked all the way to Marienplatz to take a look at the famous square. There was a lot of construction going on around there so that kind of ruined things. I felt bad for Edison though because he had a brace around his right foot which he had injured last week so he was trying hard to keep up. We tried to walk more slowly to keep to his pace.
We were extremely hungry so we headed towards the food market area if Viktualienmarkt. We all picked up food at this German food stall place. We ha no idea what was on the menu so we just pointed at stuff which worked out quite well. I ended up with some extreme ham sandwich and Chantelle with this honey infused sausage with amazing potato salad. After “lunch” we strolled around a bit more for souvenir shops, Haagen-daaz, and McDonalds.
The final two things for the afternoon was the St Peter’s Church with tower climb and the Dallmayr. The church was very normal and not as impressive considering I’ve been to a gazillion of other churches. Baroque style and restored after WW2, it isn’t very colourful and feels very plain. The climb up Edison and Emily didn’t make but we did it for 1 EUR (thanks to my Lund non expiring student card). The climb was rough but the views you’re treated to at the top are nice. Too bad the weather was crummy but I’m still thankful there’s no rain.
After the climb we came back down and headed to Dallmayr to checkout their delicatessen foods. Very gourmet and high class the salty stuff we weren’t interested in because we were so full but we did spend a bit more time on the sweets. All I got was a pistachio macaroon and tried this dark chocolate macadamia chunk that Dave bought.
Everyone was SO pooped after we decided to just head back to the hotel to nap before our 8PM reservation at Palais Keller.
We walked part of the way back up to Karlplatz for Em to check out the LV store but something about the wallet she wanted not being perfect and brand new out f the box prevented her from buying the 500 EUR wallet.
We subwayed one stop back to Hauptbahnhof. Before we headed outside though we found this awesome multipurpose store called Müller. The girls and guys stuffed on the chocolates and gummies. I did too but I also picked up this thing called “rei in der tube” which some forums recommended for cleaning clothes while backpacking and some toothpaste called elmex and aronal (two types that are apparently really good and specialized in Germany).
After the hotel we just passed out until 7:30 where we met up again at the lobby to head to dinner.
I made reservations at Palais Keller for 8:00PM. This was a traditional Bavarian restaurant that was rated pretty well. A subway ride away to Marienplatz and a walk, we found Hotel Bayerischer hidden in the basement so we had to get a concierge to lead us there. It was recommended to try the weisswurst (white sausage) but it was totally not what we were expecting. It came boiled and was really bouncy and not firm at all which gave it a strange texture to it. The other dish we ordered was some sort of ham with a sunny side egg on top. Not our cup of tea but interesting to try. Chantelle was so tired and was literally falling asleep at the table.
We walked back and on our way home we found a Starbucks and we literally hung out outside of the store as it was closed for its free wifi. Pretty hilarious considering there were still people inside doing cleaning.
After everyone got their Internet fix and Chantelle napped on a bench we split up from the rest of the group that wanted to grab a beer at the bar.

- Getting from the Munich airport into the city and the tickets-the local transit and DB have a combined airport/city ticket. What’s even better is that they have these “partner” tickets that are valid up to 5 people. So for the 8 of us we bought two and it only cost 20 EUR x2 for unlimited riding from the airport.
