IS EGYPT DANGEROUS?

Let's cut to the chase.  For some reason we automatically associate danger to Egypt.  Why is that?

REVOLUTION

Arab Spring of 2011 is what sparked a domino effect of revolutions in North Africa.  It has lead to many Presidents and instability.

WHAT WE REMEMBER IN THE NEWS

TERRORISM

It hasn't helped that there were several attacks against tourists spanning 2014-2019.

WAIT SO HOW SAFE IS EGYPT?

WHAT DO I KNOW?

I've been to Egypt twice - once in February 2017 not long after the Russian plane incident and again in October 2019, a few months after the South African tourist bus attack.

It will never be 100% safe here because of instability in the region but from what I've experienced, I've always felt safe.   What you need to know is that Egypt really cares about its tourism. There are a ton of security check points and tight controls in place for tour operators.

HERE'S THE HONEST TRUTH

WHAT I OBSERVED

1. FRIENDLY AND HOSPITABLE

2. CALM AND QUIET OUTSIDE OF CAIRO

3. TOUR OPERATORS

4. PROTECTION OF THE NILE

The locals here are passionate about their country and they treat their visitors well.

The capital will feel a little bit chaotic but once you're in Luxor, Aswan and the smaller villages, you'll feel so much safer.

Using a quality local operator like Djed Egypt Travel takes away that stress about safety

When you're sailing on the river, there's literally no worry of safety.

THE MEDIA BLOWS IT OUT OF PROPORTION

But of course, there are things that you won't like about Egypt when you go.

1. SCAMS

2. ANNOYING HASSLING

There are so many but if you have a good guide, they'll warn you of them ahead of time.

Walk into a market and the "friendly harassment" is always-on.  You just learn to ignore it.

HEALTH CONCERNS

- No malaria or yellow fever – Only eat cooked foods (unless it's fruit or vegetables that have a shell or skin) – Water is safe to brush your teeth but not for drinking – Avoid ice because it's usually made from tap water – Traveller's diarrhea is common in Egypt so try to be careful.  Dukoral is something you should consider.

- The country is currently open to travellers. - You need to present a negative RT-PCR test that was taken <72 hours before departure. - You also need proof of a valid health insurance policy
