For those that don’t know Exofficio, they’re an outdoor clothing company focused on travel, fishing and safaris. Their slogan for the Give-N-Go Boxer Briefs is “You’ll only ever need one”. The idea is that you should be able to travel with just one pair of underwear because it’s quick drying, antibacterial, breathable, lightweight, odor resistant and long-wearing.
I did my research. I bought it. I tested it and now I love it.
Best underwear ever owned
Leading up to the purchase
So I had a bit more time this year to plan for my 2012 trip and this eventually led to tech-underwear. So the thinking was that it’ll be crazy hot in Asia so I needed to upgrade my regular old Hanes cotton underwear for something that’ll be up for the “challenge”. I can’t quite remember how I stumbled upon Exofficio but it may have been Amazon or somebody else’s blog.
So I heard a lot of good things about Exofficio and decided to give it a shot during my trip to Asia. I packed one of these with some of my regular cotton ones and a few other technical ones I wanted to try including Under Armour and MEC-branded briefs.
Why technical underwear makes sense
When you travel as much as I have, regular underwear just doesn’t cut it. You want to travel light. You need it to be comfortable. You need it to be hand-washable.
Exofficio fits the bill on all fronts. For me what made it a clear winner was how I barely feel I was wearing underwear at all when I was on the road. There’s some magic sauce in that material but it’s extremely lightweight and has some of the best moisture wicking material of anything I’ve worn.
In 2012 when I travelled all around Asia, I was running on a short rotation of underwear and because of that I was forced to do a lot of hand washing as I was going along. The one pair of underwear that I could always count on drying overnight was Exofficio. Any of the cotton ones were a lost cause almost.
I’m not sure if I’ll travel with just two pairs of underwear on the road but I now own 4 and that makes a pretty good travel set I have to say :).
I’ve tried Under Armour and MEC branded briefs but truth be told, I always hesitated wearing them while I was travelling because they were either too snug fit or were too loose. Because I only had one Give-N-Go Boxer Brief with me, I always had to plan around when I was going to be more active things while on other days, I’d wear my “normal” underwear.
I wouldn’t bother with some of the others to be honest. I know $13-17 seems a bit hefty for a pair of underwear but trust me it’s totally worth it.
Where to buy?
If you’re from Canada and looking for where to buy this, I found this at Sportchek. I also found some at Atmosphere which coincidentally is owned by Sportcheck. I could’t however find it at MEC.
If you’re in the US just head over to Amazon to pick it up. I’ve bought a few pairs since my trip to augment my collection and I’ve gotten them all via Amazon. They often go on sale so keep your eye out on the prices. The last pair I was able to get them for $13.71 per pair. So price wise these aren’t going to be your cheapest pair of underwear like the ones you can get at Walmart but honestly these are at a completely different level.
My updates on the road
Update (June 1, 2012) – I’ve worn this a couple of times so far on this trip and wow it’s comfortable to travel in. No chafing and keeps you dry like it said it would. Another awesome feature about this is that you really don’t need to be too afraid of getting into the water with this. I know you’ve encountered this problem before where you know you’re going to the beach and you *might* go to the water so you just put on your swim trunks and go commando. With this you don’t have to. If you get them wet they’ll dry just as fast as your swim trunks would out of the water.
Update 2 (October 17, 2012) – I travelled all summer with this and I’ve worn it a bunch of times more here at home. This is STILL the most comfortable underwear ever. Again it’s light, easy to clean, dries fast and the Exofficio is just so damn comfortable.
There’s nothing really left to say that I haven’t said already. I’ve tested it on the road and it’s simply the best underwear I’ve owned. Not only is it great for travel, but I’ve just been wearing them on a daily basis and for things like working out and it’s still just as awesome.
Buy a pair of Exofficio Give-N-Go Boxer Briefs and it’ll transform your life! I dare you.
